Back in my earlier days of freelancing, I was pretty lax about getting upfront payments. As a result, I would sometimes have clients who had an idea, contacted me about creating a logo, and then abandoned the project before everything was completed. It happens, I get it.

Back in 2003 while working at Eagle Printing in Lincoln, Nebraska, I had a very exciting opportunity to help the Nebraska State Fair create a logo and marketing materials for their 135th anniversary. The slogan was "Treasure the Past, Envision the Future", which is great advice for anyone really.

A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege of hanging out with my cousin Jason from Bellingham, Washington for an afternoon. In honor of the occasion, I thought I would do a throwback post to showcase his logo that I helped him design for his landscaping & hardscaping business "Four Winds Gardens and Walls" back around 2005.

Alternative text, also known as "alt text," is a textual description that can be added to an image, video, or other non-textual element on a website. The primary purpose of alt text is to provide a textual equivalent of the image or element for people who may not be able to see it. This includes people with visual impairments, who may use assistive technologies such as screen readers to navigate the web.

Content expertise, authority, and trustworthiness are three core elements of creating successful search engine optimized content.
When someone searches for something in Google, the search engine will compare the content of a page to the content of other websites that are related to the topic. It will then compare the author’s reputation and the site’s overall authority to determine where the page should rank in the search results.

This one goes back to what would have probably been early 2001... Nebraska was adopting an Electronic Benefits Transfer card for what was the food stamp program (now known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP). I was a designer for the Department of Health & Human Services at the time.

It is that time of year again. A time when we all celebrate the game of football (American Football) by crowning a "world champion" in the annual Super Bowl.
There are some amongst us who may not place a lot of importance on the outcome of the game. Perhaps you are not a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles or the Kansas City Chiefs. Will you still be watching? Of course, these days you could argue that more people tune in for the commercials...
Since 1984 when Steve Jobs and Apple Computers created a huge buzz with their Super Bowl commercial announcing the soon-to-be-released "Macintosh Computer", ad agencies have been trying harness the power of that many eyeballs being focused on the television at one time.
The phenomenon of the Super Bowl commercial has created an environment that is possibly even more competitive than the game on the field. Companies spend millions of dollars for a mere seconds of time to create the most memorable commercials of the year. Thus, as with any competition there are winners and losers, and of course PREDICTIONS.

As a web designer, the main questions I get asked pertain to Search Engine Optimization or SEO. Because of this I am going to be offering some weekly SEO tips.
If you are planning to launch a website or redesign an existing website, one of the most important aspects you will want to start planning for is your site's text content.
As the site's owner, you are automatically considered one of the site's "subject matter expert (SME)", if not the only SME. Even if you are hiring a web designer/developer to build the site for you, your expertise will still be a valuable asset when creating the text content of the site.

It's that time of year again... Time to be inundated with silly ads promoting beer, movies, snack items, car manufacturers, insurance companies, and of course Amazon.
We all love Super Bowl ads. However, sometimes their beloved characters are ready to be forced into retirement. Super Bowl advertising is super expensive. National brands need to know when the time is right to walk away from a particular advertising campaign

SEO has been one of the hottest topics in web design and development over the last 20-plus years or so. Make no mistake, SEO is a very important part of any web development project — at least any web development project that is meant to be discovered by the web-surfing public.
Unfortunately, our obsession with SEO has led to the proliferation of what really amounts to SEO snake oil sales representatives.

As you are enjoying this extended weekend, please be sure to take some time to remember our fallen heroes who gave their lives for our freedom and safety.
One year ago I had the priviledge of helping create this video to remind people that even though many celebrations were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, their fallen loved ones were in our hearts. The song is "The Last Parade" by Steve Bonafel.
I greatly appreciate Steve letting me be a part of this project. I am sure he will be out performing live again this weekend.
Thank you to all the Gold Star families. We will never forget your sacrifice.

How well prepared are you for your next marketing challenge?
Has this ever happened to you? You have a great idea for your next ad campaign. Your writing team has done their part and now it is time to send everything out for design. There is just one problem… you can’t find your company logo in a quality digital format! You’ve got a .jpg file from your website, maybe that will work… You have a PDF file, but you are not sure if it is of sufficient quality for printing.
One size fits all is great for hats, but not design.
Your business is unique. Your solution should be too.
